Our next project. T shirt design.

Hi Mr. Booth! AVID is looking for an awesome shirt design. Let the students be creative with it but the only thing we do ask is to incorporate something to do with Point Loma, only use two colors, and spell out AVID which is Advancement Via Individual Determination. I'd really appreciate it thank you.

Everything that has been assigned through the self portrait is Due by Friday, which is the end of the grading period.   If you joined this class late then do as many projects as you can.  You will not be penalized.  If you have completed everything then you are free to choose another cartoon or person to draw.  No points given but the more you practice the better you will become.

Extra Credit Complex Cartoon

If you have finished you can do another complex cartoon.  If it is not one I have up, check with me to make sure it is difficult enough.

Thursday, October 8, 2015

Choose one cartoon to duplicate with the pen tool.

This is a big project.  15 points instead of 10 points.  You can earn up to 5 extra credit points if you also do the background.  When you start your new project make sure it is in inches and that the orientation is correct.  i.e.  horizontal or vertical.  Click on one image and copy and paste it onto your templet.  Create a new layer and lock layer one.  USE THE PEN TOOL.

Pen tool assignments

                  Exercise: Pen Tool Shapes

Use the pen tool Pen tool (and convert tool Convert tool) to recreate the shapes found on the provided templates. Note that there are two sets of shapes ("Sea Shapes" and "Animal Shapes").

                                                                                                                                                  Pen tool with shapes video

  1. Download and expand this zipped file; it contains two Illustrator files called "Sea Shapes" and "Animal Shapes."
  2. Open Sea Shapes first. You should see seven simple line objects. The gray lines are the lines you want to reproduce. The purple boxes are where your anchor points should go, and the magenta and yellow lines are where the "handles" should be positioned to get the proper curves.
  3. Set your fill color to none, and your stroke to black, 1pt.
  4. Trace over the objects with the pen tool Pen tool by drawing right on top of the template. Place anchor points on the purple rectangles and drag “handles” out along the guides. The magenta handles are guides that you click and drag along. The yellow handles are trickier—you drag away from them; as you do, a handle will grow out of the anchor point and move in the opposite direction of your drag. Align these "backside" handles with the yellow guides.
  5. Do not add any anchor points or reposition handles—follow the template exactly.
  6. Almost all of these shapes should be drawn as closed paths (end where you begin; no gaps). There are only two open paths/line: the cat's mouth and the contour of one of the cat's legs.
  7. Things to remember:
    • To make a corner point, just click with the pen tool Pen tool without dragging (or click on a curve point with the convert tool Convert tool).
    • To draw a smooth-curve, click and drag to create direction lines (handles).
    • To create a corner-curve point, click and drag on a handle with the convert tool.
    • To create a "hybrid" point (with one handle), click and drag to create the curve. Next. position the pointer over the last point drawn, and simply click without dragging to start a straight line.
    • Use the Direct Selection tool Direct Selection tool to edit curves and points.
    • To convert a point from curved to corner (or vice versa), use the Convert Direction tool Convert tool.
    • To join path segments, select the endpoint of each path with the direct selection tool, then choose “Average” then “Join” from the “Object” menu.
    • When you are using the pen tool Pen tool, hold down the option key to get the convert tool Convert tool; hold down the command key to get the last selection tool Direct Selection tool you used.
    • The umbrella top and handle are two separate shapes that don’t connect.
    • The palm tree is also two separate shapes.
    • Hold down the shift key to draw perfectly horizontal and vertical lines in the truck.
    • The sailboat has 6 distinct parts: mast, boom, hull, pennant, and two sails.
    • Make sure the features of the cat and its inner leg are brought to the front. The inner leg is a separate (open path) stroke.
    • The dog’s nose is a separate shape.
    • The toucan’s beak should be in front.
    • Don’t add any anchor points to any of the animals.
  8. Paint your shapes. Add fills (flat colors, gradients, or patterns).
  9. When you have completed Sea Shapes, let me check them, then move on to Animal Shapes. Note that guides for the handles are not provided for Animal Shapes; you'll have to determine where to place them.
